Fergus's story

Did you know, in 2022/2023 an astonishing 2.99 million people had to use a food bank?
We live in one of world’s wealthiest economies, yet millions of people are struggling to keep food on the table. Your support means we can help more people like Fergus, who tells us his story below:
“I’m a single dad, living with my two daughters near Glasgow.
"Every day I wake up worrying about money. It’s a constant, persistent worry. On Universal Credit all I’m doing is surviving, not living. It allows you to just about get from month to month. You are paying for food, you're paying your bills, paying for your essentials like gas and electricity which have been going up.
"I refuse to have my daughters being cold. If that means paying for more gas and paying less for my food, I’ll do it. I make sure my daughters are well fed but I often don’t think about breakfast or lunch. I just drink coffee to get through my day and I’ll have something to eat at night with them.
"It’s tough. You are weighing things up, shuffling round your budget. I can’t afford to put any money aside. I’m having to look after my parents too, which is taking up most of my time at the moment.
"This Christmas I received a one-off grant from Turn2us. It took a lot of the stress away for a wee while. It was a huge bonus and allowed me to treat the girls to some extras and meant I could enjoy it too, which was good for a change.”
Here at Turn2us, we believe that by working together we can create meaningful change for people living with financial insecurity. We believe everyone should be able to afford the basics and live with dignity, and thrive, not just survive. By supporting Turn2us, you are part of our movement for a brighter future. Your support means everything. Thank you.
