Michael Clarke, Head of Information Programmes at Turn2us, said:
“We welcome Rishi Sunak to his new role as Prime Minister. His appointment comes at a pivotal moment for our economy. Our country is in the midst of a national emergency as the cost-of-living crisis gets worse by the day. It is now of paramount importance that he puts stability first and provides reassurance to those of us on the lowest of incomes. It is imperative that benefits are uprated to meet inflation with no compromises. If benefits are not uprated, it will result in a real-term cut to income and yet another financial shock to families already living in crisis.
Benefits are not a lifestyle choice. In the current cost-of-living crisis, more people than ever have to rely on benefits, including people in work. The current benefits system is not robust, and people are being denied dignity because of it.
Those of us on the lowest incomes have borne the brunt of the disruption in Government in recent months. It is time to put them first. Now, more than ever, it is time for intervention. We call on the government to keep their promises and uprate benefits in line with inflation.”
