In response to the National Housing Federations report on poverty in the private rented sector, Matthew Geer, Campaigns Manager at Turn2us, said:
“Almost half of children living in the private rented sector are in poverty. This is not a choice but rather a bleak reality facing many soon to be young adults who will have been raised in homes where they are locked in generational financial hardship.
“We cannot carry on blindly handing over Housing Benefit to private landlords while we ignore the structural problems behind the housing crisis.
“However, it is within the Government's power to make change for the next generation. By building more affordable housing, reversing welfare cuts and improving wages these trends can be reversed over time. We speak to people every day who desire a hand up, over a hand out."
