HMRC: Update child details or benefits stop

Share

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are warning families that they must update their children’s details or payments of Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits will stop.

Details of when your child becomes 16+ must be kept up to date and HMRC must be informed of changes to a child’s educational status.

The details must be updated before 31 August if they are continuing in full time non-advanced education or approved training.

Parents can use the Personal Tax Account service to update their Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit information online.

Alternatively, you can call 0300 200 3100 or send a letter to either address:

  • Child Tax Credits, Tax Credits Office, Preston, PR1 4AT

  • Child Benefit, Child Benefit Office, PO Box 1, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE88 1AA

If a child is leaving education or training, claimants must report this change straight away to prevent overpayments – which they will have to pay back.

Angela MacDonald, Director General of Customer Services, said: “Once parents or guardians know what their child has decided to do, it’s really important they let us know as soon as possible, so they continue to get the right benefits and credits.”
