Extra help for winter 2024/25
In winter 2023/24 the UK Government introduced several schemes to help people cope with rising prices. These included one-off cost of living payments for people on Eligibility depends on the amount of income and capital you have. See full definition , older people, and those with disabilities. There was also an Energy Price Guarantee to support with increase fuel prices.
However, for winter 2024/25, these cash payments have been discontinued, and the Energy Price Guarantee is no longer in place. Additionally, the Winter Fuel Payment that was previously available to all pensioner, is now limited to those receiving certain benefits.
Household Support Fund
In September 2024, the UK Government extend the Household Support Fund until April 2025. The fund is helps households struggling with energy and water bills, food and other essential items.
It’s managed by local councils and authorities in England and the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The type of support you receive and eligibility criteria may vary depending on where you live. This could include food and fuel vouchers, help with essential items, or small cash payments.

Winter Fuel Payment
The Winter Fuel Payment is a one-off, tax-free payment made during the winter to help with heating costs. In July 2024, changes were announced to the 2024/25 Winter Fuel Payment scheme. Previously it was open to everyone above State Pension age, but now you must have reached State Pension age and be receiving a qualifying Eligibility depends on the amount of income and capital you have. This means most people who received the payment last year will not qualify this winter. If you do meet the new eligibility criteria and are receiving Pension Credit or another specified benefit, you will be paid automatically. However, if you didn’t receive a payment last year or if you or your partner are on Universal Credit, you may need to claim.

Other weather payments
Depending on where you live and your circumstances, there are additional payments and support available:
- The Warm Home Discount Scheme provides £150 off energy bills in winter 2024/25. It is available in England, Scotland, and Wales. You can find more information in our Warm Home Discount Scheme guide.
- Cold Weather Payments are available in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for people on certain benefits. You’ll get £25 if the temperature in your area drops to zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days. For more information, read our Cold Weather Payments guide.
- A Winter Heating Payment is one-off payment of £58.75 made to people living in Scotland who get a qualifying benefit. It is usually paid between December and February. For more information, read the Winter Heating Payment guidance on mygov.scot.
- A Child Winter Heating Payment is a one-off payment of £251.50 for households in Scotland with a child or young person with a disability. You can find more information on the mygov.scot.
